ABOUT US
San Francisco’s only soul jazz speakeasy lounge (that we’re aware of!), *soundscape occurs the first Saturday of every month at the Vortex Room.
Beginning in June 2009, the night was set up to bring more attention to mod-oriented jazz music from the ’50s and ‘60s, but quickly grew to encompass various great sounds including soul jazz, hard bop, ‘dancefloor’ jazz, latin jazz, boogaloo, Hammond grooves, bossa nova, and even sounds from today’s jazz scene.
Expect a mellow but hip evening surrounded by the colorful pop-art décor of the Vortex Room, the perfect environment to doll yourself up in your best cocktail dress or slim-fitting, sharp suit. While diggin’ the scene around you, mod-era films from the ‘50s and ‘60s play on the Vortex movie screen in the background.
The types of sounds you can expect to hear include Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Nicola Conte, Georgie Fame, Grant Green, Jimmy Smith, Dave Pike, Hi-Fly Orchestra, Jimmy McGriff, Keith Mansfield, Willie Bobo, Ramsey Lewis, Mongo Santamaria, The Link Quartet, Pretty Purdie, The Bongolian, Booker T. and the M.G.s, Nina Simone, Nick Rossi Set, Lou Donaldson, Charles Earland, The Mohawks, Joe Cuba, Brian Auger, and many more!
